What Mutual Aid can look like
Tumblr media
If you grow up in modern society, there is a good chance you will only ever associate anarchism with violence and rebellion. This ignores though the core principle of anarchism. Like one of the things, that anarchism is build around: Mutual Aid.
And guess what: That kinda is something that human society for the longest time has been build around. (See also what I wrote a few weeks ago about gift societies before money was a thing.)
Mutual Aid is just, what it sounds like: Helping each other in ways we can help. Which can mean a lot of different things, because different people have different abilities to help.
You know, one of the things I liked about the early pandemic with the lockdown and what not was, that people rediscovered Mutual Aid, because a lot of people did not only need it, but also had the time to do it.
And what we really need to learn is, that Mutual Aid does not mean that everyone does exactly the same for each other (in terms of workload). Because some people just have more capacities than other people. And that is okay.
Too often Mutual Aid when discussed in media kinda only focuses on financial aid. And do not get me wrong: Helping someone to cover essencial costs is absolutely 100% a form of Mutual Aid. But... This is still very much caught within the capitalist thinking. And it can be so much more. So... Let me talk what else Mutual Aid can be:
Cooking for each other/for your neighboors. Maybe you have this old guy in the neighboorhood who just cannot properly cook for himself, because he just cannot stand for long enough to do it. Or maybe there is this single mom with two kids who works long hours and just does not have the energy to properly cook afterwards. And you might be cooking either way. So maybe you can cook for them, too?
Something we saw in the pandemic a lot: Going grocery shopping for your friends or neighbours. People were unable to go shopping because they themselves got infected with COVID or were immuno compromised? Folks went shopping for them. Why not keep it up? Covid is not over. Also, that old lady downstairs might have issues carrying her own groceries.
Repairing all sorts of things for other people. Be it their broken computer, their broken bike or car, or be it fixing that hole in their clothing. You have the skills to fix it? Why not fix it for them then, instead of forcing them to either buy new stuff or have it fixed for a ton of money.
Or one thing my roommate will always do for me: Cut my hair. That, too, is mutual aid. I need that hair cut. She will do it for me. That, too, is mutual aid.
Or if you are skilled in sowing, maybe actually sew clothes for people who cannot afford proper ones (aka clothing that is not gonna fall apart after a year)? That, too, is mutual aid.
And there is this friend who needs to go somewhere but does not have a car and the place is not easily reachable with other modes of transportation? Yeah, driving them is another form of Mutual Aid.
I could go on and on about this, babysitting, petsitting, helping someone clean, borrowing tools and so on... I think you get the idea, though. Mutual aid is... surprisingly easy. And most people already give it out on a pretty regular basis.
Because, again: People are actually pretty darn decent. We usually do things for each other because doing things for each other actually feels kinda good.
So... yeah. Maybe think about that. And think about how great society would be if more people were doing this.

"Tie this please?"
Hero and Villain must tolerate each other for a single mission. Villain makes a bet while he helps Hero get ready.
No warnings. Poorly written, not my favorite, but somebody else will most likely enjoy.
Tumblr media
“Help me tie this please.” Hero turned to hide the faint blush that had started to cover her cheeks. When their job meant going under cover Superhero handled everything. This time ‘everything’ meant having Villain as their partner. Joining sides against a greater evil was commendable but Hero made sure to avoid Villains ever watchful eyes, without the guise of hate it seemed she liked their color more than any self-respecting enemy should. As Supervillain’s plan went into play both Hero and Villain were set to attend the royal gala. As a married couple.
Hero tried not to think about it as she turned around, Villain beginning to tug at the string on her corset. He pulled the laces taunt but not nearly enough.
“Tighter” Hero braced herself knowing she would be pulled back. Sure enough the Villain understood this time and tightened it. Hero winced the fabric constricted all around her and she put a hand to her stomach getting used to the harsh feeling against any bruises and lack of air.
Villain kept a good grip on the laces as he awaited further instruction, all he received was a short. “I can’t breathe in this ridiculous thing.” Hero hung her head keeping herself together.
“Do I need to loosen it?” His response was immediate.
Hero threw back their head in exasperation. She didn’t want him to be so gentle with her, it sat too nicely in the depths of her chest. All she wanted to focus on was getting in the stupid dress, not that fact that he was standing so close behind her and being considerate of all things.
“No, Villian just,” she grit her teeth in annoyance “don’t care about me. That shouldn’t be so hard huh? Just tighten it.” She dared another breath preparing for him to obey. He paused.
“Are you sure you don’t fit into the dress now? Perhaps you should try it—”
“You can drop the act of a doting husband while it’s just us. Save yourself the trouble and keep the show for everyone else. Just tighten please.” Hero knew she snapped; she also knew she was being vastly unfair.
“Well pardon me your ladyship for trying to keep air in your lungs.” Sarcasm dripped from his tone. At least if he was annoyed with her this whole thing would be easier. She swallowed, pushing down any guilt from her previously rude tone. She felt small tugs on the laces.
“What are you doing back there?”
“Tying you off”
“You’re supposed to be tightening me.” Hero tried to turn but the Villains hands travelled the short distance from her ties to her waist firmly keeping her facing forward. Hero stilled instantly; she wasn’t ready for that.
“Hold still will you. Let me finish.”
Hero didn’t have any words as he waited until he was sure she wouldn’t turn before finally removing his hands from her waist and she felt the pull of the ties once more. It wasn’t fair for him to take away her breath when she had so little of it.
He tapped her back where the laces were all tied.
“All finished.”
Now she dared to turn. “I thought I told you to tighten it more.” She tried to be stern, but the words didn’t come out half as harsh as she wanted them to be. His eyes scanned her face, and his eyebrow quirked “And I told you to try the dress first.” He casually walked to the chair that held the absurdly intricate yet beautiful gown the agency had provided for the night.
“Is this how it’s going to be all night? You not listening to me, because I’m telling you right now that’s not going to fly.” She watched as he picked up the dress and deposited it in her arms. A small little grin tugged at the corner of his mouth.
“Oh, it won’t fly? Maybe I just did my job right, ever consider that?” he nodded to the dress.
She swallowed, the amount of stubbornness and calm behavior had her blood boiling just enough it was in danger of melting her heart. She was playing a dangerous game.
“If it doesn’t fit, I have to take it off again and you’ve just made more work for the both of us.”
“I hardly consider myself on the clock.”
“Keep it professional” her eyes flashed, professionalism was her excuse to hide behind, “you would never be in the position of helping me like this if it weren’t for our job.”
He raised both eyebrows and nodded “Right, I’ll consider my very nice gesture of lacing up your corset a very tiresome and bothersome activity I do everyday at work.”
Hero had had it, not to mention she was pretty sure her cheeks were getting pink again. She tossed the dress at him. “Shut up and put this back.”
“No.” he stood defiantly.
“No?”
“I have a deal for you.”
“Villain, save it for later, just put it back.”
“Hear me out Hero.” He opened the dress for her to step in. “Try it on and if it doesn’t fit you get to say I told you so and I will heartily beg your forgiveness.”
She looked at him with some confusion. “You? Beg?” She had to stifle a chuckle.
“On my knees.” He looked wistfully dramatic like he was toying with her. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing and couldn’t tell if he was being serious or not.
“Oh, the drama. I hate to know what my side of the bargain would be.”
He smiled a little. “A dance.”
Her heart skipped. What was he trying to do? “A-A dance?” She ignored her own stutter and hoped he would as well. His mouth turned up just a fraction as he noticed.
“If it fits you, all I ask is a single dance.”
She tried to put on every mask she had, suppress every betraying expression that warred for prominence on her face. Instead of addressing what he said directly she tried a different approach. “We are already dancing tonight I don’t see the point.”
She turned just a little trying to avoid his gaze that suddenly was becoming too much as she feigned fixing her hair in the mirror.
“No, our aliases are dancing together tonight.”
She rolled her eyes in order to seem uninterested. “That’s still us dummy.”
He came up behind her dress in hand as he brought it out in front of her ready to get in. He chuckled. “Dummy huh? Real original. Step.” He held the dress open expectantly.
“Not until you tell me what you mean.” She turned and looked up at him, slightly regretting it due to how close he now was.
He sighed feigning being put out as he lowered the dress. “I want one dance with you Hero. Not as my fake trophy wife that the public believes you to be. I want one dance where you aren’t tense and looking around the ballroom for trouble with every spin. Just the real you and the real me.”
Hero couldn’t believe what she was hearing, her voice came out quiet and her eyes were a little wider than normal. “That sounded dangerously unprofessional Villain.”
“Good, that’s how I meant it.” He stepped forward, his eyes sparkling as he tapped her foot with hers as he held out the waiting fabric once more. “Step?”
She turned hoping he didn’t see the way actions had completely disarmed her. She stepped carefully into the fabric and tried not to react to the feeling of him doing up the buttons all the way up her back. “What if I were to say I hope that it doesn’t button all the way?”
He paused just long enough to gently pull her hair out of the way and drape it to front of her shoulder. “I would say I don’t believe that for a moment.”
She swallowed as he did up the last button. “Good because I don’t either.”

Tbh when I first watched MHA and got to the preview for ep 3 and realized Izuku was going to be the world’s greatest hero because All Might was going to give him a quirk, and not because he was heroic enough without one, I was a little bit disappointed. The end of ep 2 leaves you feeling so high and that one spoiler brought down a notch for me
Now? Izuku deserves a quirk more than anyone, so sure, having him give everything, down to destroying parts of his body without repair, just to lose the quirk? Also feels a little bit disappointing, if that’s where we’re headed, just because he’s sacrificed so much
THAT BEING SAID. Izuku was a hero before OFA and he’s gonna be a hero after it. That’s an indisputable fact. And the last thing standing in his way is the barrier Kacchan and All Might put in front of him all the way at the front end of this story: that being a hero requires a quirk. Seeing Izuku overcome that would be so insane

These days people give up on each other too easily. It takes work and constant effort to stay together with someone for a long time. Especially if they’re your opposite. They now say it’s a miracle if a couple lasts more than 10-15 years. The truth is that it’s us who manufacture that miracle.

Paul and Joanne were together for fifty years before Paul’s death of lung cancer in 2008. Those fifty years were not all roses and butterflies, they loved each other enough though to work through their troubled years together.

I'm going to say this once and I will say it again. I have seen more and more of defeitist speech regarding the genoside in palestine. Things like "protesting doesn't help, none of this matters" and "the international court doesn't even work" and that type of stuff. It's the same with other causes like transrights and climate change.
This doomer type attitude doesn't fucking help anyone. If you start to go down that path you quickly arrive at "nothing matters so I shouldn't do anything".
Like I get that you are exhausted there's so much stuff going on and you might spiral about it, but you have to find ways to keep yourself from going down this path. If everyone ends up there nobody will ever try to make things better.
The ball is in your court. What can you do to help yourself and others to not give up like this? I don't have answers to that question but I do believe we all have to work to make that not happen.

Humans are not Lone Wolves
Tumblr media
Something additionally to what I wrote yesterday... Let me just make one thing clear: Humans are not lone wolves. (Heck, even wolves are no lone wolves.) We a social animals. Like super social. We are build to work in communities. We evolved to work in communities. Or if you want to go with the deistic version: We were created to work in communities. Either or, does not matter. Humans are social animals.
Modern media kinda loves to paint this picture of rugged individuals saving the big problems. Because capitalism just fucking loves the individualistic worldview. But that is just not how we work. Not at all.
We solve problems best in groups. And by that I do not mean the big superhero teamup movie at the end of MCU phase 16 or what not, but I mean as a general thing. Whenever we humans make some big advancement, we do it because a lot of people worked together to solve a problem.
And, admittedly, a lot of times when things go haywire, it is also because groups of people messed up. Though people really hate to think about it that way.
Of course, capitalism hates this idea. While capitalism obviously is dependend on a fuck-ton of people working together to make that stupid imaginary line go up, the people in charge of capitalism also know that people as a group hold too much power. And that people, if they realized this power, might become a fucking problem.
That is why they keep feeding us the story of the rugged individual solving the problem. While also turning all problems we currently have on the world, into individual problems.
Be it: "Oh, you worry about climate change? Well, try and lower your own carbon footprint!"
Or be it: "Oh, you are poor? Well, then think about how you failed in your life that it ended up like that?"
And of course: "Oh, that man is rich? Well, he as an individual just worked soooooo hard, to get there. Take him as an example!"
But all of those things are lies. Climate change is not the result of individuals making the wrong choices, but of a system that does not care about the environment. Poor people are very much, too, victims to a system rigged against them. Just as pretty much all the rich folks got rich because the system had been rigged in their favor generations ago.
We are humans. We are social animals. We exist in a society. We exist within systems. Right now those systems are hurting us and the planet.
Time to break them. Together.
